FROM THE CLUBHOUSE JAGUAR DRIVERS’ CLUB It looks like the Jaguar fraternity is determined to make up for lost time and get cracking on some post-pandemic action and the Jaguar Drivers’ Club is no exception. This is a particularly special year, being the centenary of Swallow – the company that became first SS, and ultimately Jaguar. FEATURE CAR D-TYPE “Who painted this D-type red?” was my thought when first laid eyes on this legendary machine. Most Jaguar competition cars are BRG, or British Racing Green, a livery thought by many to be ‘proper’ for a car of this ilk. Sure a few black, blue, or even white cars are out there, but a bright red car stands out like a low-cut sequin cocktail dress at the Queen’s tea party. ROAD TRIP XK120 Please forgive me if I become a little overexcited as you read the following pages. You would too if you had shared this riproaring experience of piloting a historic XK120 across the dramatic landscape of the Shropshire Hills. The trip came about with astounding good fortune as I received the blessing of SNG Barratt’s CEO, Julian Barratt, to employ the company’s praiseworthy classic Jaguar fleet as photographic subject vehicles for a scenic driving days guidebook that I am compiling. RUNNING REPORT V12 E-TYPE For the last few years, I have adopted the principle of owning a 'floating classic', whereby I aim to change my car every couple of years, trading up or down (in age) to a different classic Jaguar. Automobilia Ian Cooling recalls a splendid collection of trophies and automobilia that straddled the wartime years. George Matthews was a journeyman driver for over 20 years. Born in 1905, he started competitive driving in the early 1930s and his first recorded SS mount was a 2.5 litre saloon DEV 207 – in the 1936 Welsh Rally. The SS90 and SS100 were launched in 1935 and quickly proved their competitive worth. George duly switched and he was still driving them competitively in club events through to the mid-1950s. Needless to say, a career like this generated a superb collection of trophies and automobilia. WORKSHOP In Part 1 we reported on how the existing fuel pump was utilised to supply the swirl pot, which in turn feeds the high-pressure pump and then on to the injection fuel rail and back to the swirl pot via a fuel regulator. This time we continue with fitting the inlet manifold, ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and associated wiring. The Mangoletsi inlet manifold is supplied with a rose jointed linkage, operated by a pair of cables. To further refine the operation, a completely new, infinitely variable, cable accelerator mechanism and pedal box has been designed. Versions are also available for cars with SU carburettors and left hand drive installations. Be under no illusions about the fitting of this system; it is far more involved than fitting a set of…
