The new normal The last issue of Classic Jaguar went on sale just days after the UK announced its ‘lockdown’ restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, making it harder for our readers to find the magazine for sale locally. Like all businesses that rely on retail trade, this provided a whole new set of challenges, hence a major push towards subscriptions and mailorder copies of single issues. AJ16 ARRIVAL A development of the AJ6 engine – the AJ16 – made its debut in the XJ-S before it appeared in the XJ6, marking a significant overhaul of the unit. Retaining the basic architecture of the all-alloy twin-cam four-valve AJ6, the AJ16 received a new cylinder head with revised induction porting, re-profiled cams and a coil-on plug ignition system. The cooling system was revised to improve warm-up time by 15%, while compression was increased and lighter aluminium pistons were used. The end result was a power increase of 8% to 238bhp, with torque up to 278lb.ft and a noticeable improvement in refinement as well as the emissions and economy improvements for which the redesign had been created.…

FEATURE CAR XJ-C CONVERTIBLE SOFT-TOP SENSATION We take a trip to Denmark to sample an Avon-built XJ-C, the two-door coupé that was skilfully transformed into an aesthetically and dynamically rewarding convertible WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY: IVAN OSTROFF Any example of the shortlived, twodoor Jaguar XJC has a certain rarity appeal these days. Official production of the new XJ coupé didn’t get under way until 1975, and by the end of 1977 it was being killed off – after a total run of just 10,426 cars. For the ultimate in XJC scarcity, however, we need look no further than the convertible conversion carried out by Warwickbased Avon-Stevens, such as the Danishregistered example featured here – a car that began life as a standard 4.2litre XJC in 1975 before being given the softtop…

UP FRONT NEWS AND VIEWS SIR STIRLING MOSS, 1929-2020 The Jaguar world was saddened by the news back in April that Sir Stirling Moss had passed away, aged 90. Stirling won an incredible 212 of the 529 races he entered across several categories of competition, often being described as “the greatest driver never to win the World Championship”. In a seven-year span between 1955 and ’61, he finished as championship runnerup no fewer than four times. Stirling Moss first competed in a Jaguar – a borrowed XK120 – in 1950, impressing Sir William Lyons so much that he was asked to lead the works team the following year. He drove for Jaguar Cars through to the end of 1954 and remained a dedicated Jaguar fan throughout his life. May 1951…

FAMILY CONNECTION Barry Coupe inherited the ‘car bug’ from his father, Des, a man who was passionate about all things motoring. Indeed, it was always assumed that Des would join the family garage business (located between Preston and Blackpool), but that plan changed after he tragically lost his sight whilst serving in the Second World War. ROAD AND TRACK Prompted by Tom Walkinshaw’s TWR Racing, which was keen to use the XJ-S in the European Touring Car championship, a motorsport programme was established under the JaguarSport banner. The racing XJ-S was a success, duly taking the championship in 1984. The partnership proved sufficiently fruitful that the JaguarSport tag was extended to road cars, with a joint-venture company established to produce suitably enlivened road cars, plucked from the production line and then taken to TWR’s premises to be modified. The JaguarSport cars featured chunky body kits, wider alloy wheels, firmer and lower suspension and sports steering wheels, as well as engine tuning. The early JaguarSport XJRs were relatively mildly modified, with just handling and cosmetic modifications, although this was eventually joined with engine work to offer 248bhp…

JAGUAR HISTORY XJ-S DEVELOPMENT STAYING POWER With an extended career that saw great change at Jaguar, the XJ-S went from uncertain beginnings to much-deserved triumph in later life, as Paul Wager explains PHOTOGRAPHY: KELSEY ARCHIVE Depending on your own personal perspective, the XJ-S marks either Jaguar’s finest hour or its greatest folly, although even the car’s detractors must concede that its 21-year career makes it one of the Coventry firm’s most successful models. Indeed, the XJ-S was only narrowly beaten in terms of longevity by the ‘Series’ XJ saloon, which clocked up 24 years thanks to production of the XJ12 continuing into the early ’90s. TECHNICAL XJ SII BALL-JOINTS TECHNICAL BALL-JOINT UPGRADE Rob Hawkins explains how to put an end to shimmingup and pumping grease into your Jaguar’s suspension ball-joints by upgrading to modern sealed units PHOTOGRAPHY: ROB HAWKINS Traditional suspension ball-joints require routine maintenance to help keep them in good working order. Grease needs to be pumped in to help keep them free-moving and reduce the risk of them seizing, although there’s a certain amount of movement allowed that can be adjusted by adding or removing shims. All of this work can be eliminated, however, by upgrading to a more modern sealed ball-joint, which is already lubricated inside and doesn’t use any shims.
