Thanks to its narrow track, high ride height and boxy dimensions, the Fiat Panda supermini lent itself well to a 4x4 drivetrain, which was part of Fiat’s plan for the car from its 1980 debut.
The first Panda 4x4 arrived in June 1983, powered by a 48bhp 965cc engine derived from that of the Autobianchi A112. It was the first small, transverse-engined production car to have a 4WD system, which was manually selectable, with a super-low ratio first gear meaning that, in normal road conditions, you’d pull away in second.
