OPEL MANTA
General Motors’ ‘Capri’ enjoyed a production run that was even longer than the Ford’s, from 1970 to 1989. The closest you’ll get to the Mk3 2.8i is a 1980s Manta GT/E, but unlike the Capri, the Opel never had a V6 engine. Nevertheless, it’s still a cool companion, great to drive and with simple, easy-to-maintain mechanical parts.
JAGUAR XJS
Comparing a Capri with an XJS may not have been the natural choice back in the day, but if you want an iconic, British-built coupé then today, prices of XJSs and Capris are comparable, with the very best Fords commanding more than the equivalent Jaguar. Yet if you go for a later six-cylinder XJS, you get a smart, dependable car that can be surprisingly affordable to run.
