Announced at the 1965 London Motor Show, the MGB GT was mechanically near identical to the roadster except for a front anti-roll bar, uprated rear springs for the extra weight, and a Salisbury axle. At 115kg heavier than the roadster, the GT’s acceleration was blunted, but the streamlined shape did allow it to reach 104mph rather than 102mph, while also offering better economy. The GT also came as standard with a heater, which the roadster didn’t get until 1969.
The GT, therefore, kept the fun factor but also kept you warm and dry. What’s more, it had a cabin comfortable for two six-foot adults. The rear bench provided sufficient space for two children or one tolerant adult, but could also fold flat to provide a large, low boot floor, accessed…
