Orchard Garage Ltd in Dartford has been testing a production prototype Rover P6 since 1984, and has now ensured its part in the car’s upkeep by issuing a fresh pass certificate to the car 40 years on. Paul Smith, former chairman of the P6 Rover Owners Club, is the proud owner of 145 FLK, one of two FLK-registered Rover P6 2000 models from a pool of 40 that were used for press duties around the time of the car’s launch in 1963. The second ‘FLK’ car is also owned by Smith. Essentially a pre-production car, 145 FLK is an important piece of British motoring history preserved under Smith’s stewardship – with help from the same MoT centre since 1984. With more Millennial and Gen Z drivers out there, there’s been a shift in the way so-called ‘modern classics’ are perceived – as reflected by the return of Hagerty’s RADwood festival celebrating 1980s and ‘90s machinery, plus the launch of a new index from the company charting the values of such vehicles. Those who root for the underdog have long favoured the Triumph Stag, railing against how cruel a hand history dealt it. Enthusiasts have since worked their way around its problems and continue to drive, restore and enjoy their Stags across the world, while values steadily rise. Conwy Classics’ 1977 Mk2 was treated to a full nut and bolt restoration in 2014, its original colour, (as stated on the VIN and Heritage Certificate) changed from Russet Brown to Carmine Red. A decade later, the restoration still holds up well, though Stag aficionados will note the gold body stripe is upside-down. During the 1960s and ‘70s, Ford were masters of wrapping all-round competent family transport in glamorous, stylish bodywork that made you want it on your driveway. The Mk1 Cortina demonstrates this perfectly; looking desirable even in estate form, this 1966 1500 example at Car Cave more than proves the point. Imported from South Africa a couple of years ago, this right hand drive Cortina is in remarkably tidy and rust-free condition. It has original floors, inner wings, strut tops, arches, sills and front wings, with only a lower quarter repair and minor paint rectification preventing this car’s bodywork from being totally original. Everyone’s talking about the new Renault 5 EV, but there’s something very charming about an original ‘Supercinq’ – specially one of the first like this. Offered by RFH Classics, this GTL shows what a charming thing the French supermini still is, particularly when resplendent in what is described as time-warp condition with just 32,000 miles on the odometer. Bar a couple of stone chips, the distinctive Grenada Metallic red paintwork is described as remarkably clean and still boasting a lovely, polished shine. The panels have escaped carpark dents or any signs of rust, while even the dark grey plastic trim is straight, seemingly unmarked and has a shine of its own. Here at CCB we were saddened to hear of the passing of Robert Young on April 29 at the age of 75. Robert was Ex-Works Registrar of the Mini Cooper Register, and spent 12 years as chairman before stepping down earlier this year. During that time he steered the club to a strong position in terms of membership and reputation within the classic car world. A new feature showcasing cars, engines and video content from Richard Hammond’s DriveTribe social media platform will launch at the Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset on June 24. Alongside iconic TV cars, including ‘Oliver’ the 1962 Opel Kadett driven by Richard in the Top Gear Botswana Special, the display features a V10 engine and a mix of video displays, interactive features and behind the scenes stories. The world of pre-war motoring remains an affordable one packed full of curios, yet if you choose wisely, can also yield classics that needn’t be relegated to weekend show duties. The 1937 Morris Eight Tourer offered by RFH Classics obviously isn’t designed for motorway-munching, but looks a lovely example of a pre-war classic to use regularly now spring is here. With history dating back to 1971, RFH have confirmed that this car was subject to a body-off restoration from 2006-2011, and it still holds up extremely well today.
