The fifth-generation Accord was typical Honda fare, with safe styling, a practical interior, commendable ride and bombproof reliability. Accusations of the Accord being bland were silenced in 1998 by the Type R. Powered by a 209hp 2.2-litre VTEC engine, the Accord Type R put its power through a Torsen limited-slip differential to get to 60mph in just 6.7 seconds, only stopping at 141mph. Visually, the bigger alloys, brash body kit and sizeable rear spoiler gave the Accord some excitement, while Recaro seats, a Momo steering wheel and alloy gear knob sportified the interior.
