MERCEDES-BENZ SLK230 R170 (1996-2004)
The R170 Mercedes-Benz SLK was launched in 1996, based heavily on its bigger sibling, the C-Class. In order to maintain even weight distribution, Mercedes opted for a 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine, with power bolstered via a supercharger. The R170 plugged into the growing market for small premium roadsters, going head-to-head with the likes of the BMW Z3 and Porsche Boxster, its USPs being that supercharged engine and an electric folding metal roof. The SLK was a £30,000 car when new, but that still undercut the Porsche and over 310,000 were sold in total until the model was replaced in 2004. Cars were available for £20,000 once they were five years old, and low-spec cars even fell to around £10,000 in pretty quick order.
