The European Parliament has approved a ban on the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid-engined cars from 2035. By law, manufacturers will be required to achieve a 100 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions, effectively banning the sale of combustion-engined vehicles. An intermediate target requires a 55 per cent reduction in emissions – compared with 2021 levels – by 2030. Low-volume manufacturers that register fewer than 1000 new cars each year are in line for an exemption. Morgan, which builds approximately 800 cars per year, would therefore be exempt at today’s production levels, leaving its 3 Wheeler, Plus Four and Plus Six models potentially unaffected. Its pared-back interior was reminiscent of the rally car upon which it was based. Just 200 homologation versions were built, sold new through Austin Rover dealers. Peugeot 205 T16 Sharing very little with the regular 205, the T16 ran a mid-mounted 1775cc four-cylinder turbocharged engine based on the XU unit, mated to a Citroën SM gearbox.
