The original ‘S30’ line of Datsuns, starting with the 240Z, was hailed as the badly-needed modern sports cars for the 1970s as British and European offerings became increasingly outdated, unrefined, asthmatic and poorly made. Although conceived and pitched at mid-range stalwarts like the MGB, the 240Z’s combination of a low-slung coupe body, fully independent suspension, six-cylinder engine and saloon car running gear put many people in mind of an early Jaguar E-Type, even if the 240Z would never match the Jaguar for glamour or prestige.
