A consistent theme running through motoring history, from the original MG Midget of the 1920s to the Toyota GT86 of the 2010s, is that however strong the calls for simple, basic, high-fun, accessible sports cars are, when such a machine does arrive it will soon find itself gaining more power, more equipment, more comfort and a higher price. And the Mazda MX-5 was no exception, conceived as a modern incarnation of the classic everyman sports car and originally presented with a 1.6-litre engine, a manual transmission and dinky 15-inch wheels. An automatic gearbox, power steering, electric windows, a radio and air conditioning were all options.
