When I first started writing about old cars in the mid-’90s, my own transport choices were a knackered Allegro or a Triumph 1500 with a gearbox as noisy as an Iron Maiden concert. Between them, the pair carried me dutifully to work and back every day, a round trip of about six miles.
They weren’t, however, deemed reliable enough for me to do large journeys in, so whenever I had to undertake a longer journey for work my employer would insist I took a hire car, which was normally a Fiesta, Mondeo or Astra. All dutiful and decent enough cars, but very ordinary.
