One significant anniversary which has quietly slipped by overshadowed by current events is the 60th anniversary of Mazda cars. The company was established as a commercial vehicle maker in 1920 but its entry into the car market in May 1960 was with the tiny R360, at 2.98m long slightly smaller than our own Mini but likewise a full four-seater. It was in 1967 that the Mazda brand arrived in Europe, its initial offering being the second-generation Familia, badged as the Mazda 1000 which became the 323 from 1977, later replaced by the Mazda3. Curiously, the firm’s press material makes little mention of the cars we’d consider significant: Mazda was one of the first makers to licence Wankel rotary engine for production and managed to make a success of the concept…

Porsche 924S It’s long been accepted in the classic car world that when investment potential fuels values of a certain model to rise beyond the means of the enthusiast, the car on the rung down follows it. The modern-day Bentley Motors we refer to in the news item to the left may today be a part of the mighty Volkswagen Group but that company itself wouldn’t exist were it not for the efforts of the British in resurrecting it from the ashes of WW2. It was 75 years ago in June 1945 that British troops replaced the US in Wolfsburg, with the British Military Government assuming trusteeship over the shattered factory. A lack of interior light was increasingly irritating in regular use, but removing the light revealed a bulb that looked like it had blown when the millennium fireworks went off. A new bulb saw light restored, but not entirely. The light switched on manually and when the passenger’s door was opened, but the driver’s courtesy light switch appears non-existent. Whether the switch has broken or dropped into the pillar, I don’t know, but the dome light works of a fashion, so we’ll revisit this later. After seven years the Coventry Motofest was just getting into its stride when the global pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 event, which would have taken place on June 6-7. Even Covid-19 couldn’t completely crush the enthusiasm of the car fans in Britain’s original motor city though, with the organisers holding a virtual concours over the same weekend. Hosted jointly by the Association of Heritage Engineers and Coventry Motofest, the event consisted of four categories with the results presented live by Event Director James Noble from his garage. Entries were submitted via the MotoFest Facebook page with a panel of judges deciding the result and a People’s Vote submitted by users. It’s fair to say that Mini people don’t generally demonstrate a half-hearted commitment to their chosen vehicle and for many it’s more a way of life than a means of transport. THE YUGO 45A TEMPO There are added-value special editions… and then there’s the Tempo. As if the Yugo range of Yugoslavian-made recycled Fiats wasn’t cheap enough, the Tempo stripped out the luxuries further and trimmed the price down to just £2999 in 1991 – exactly half the price of the most basic Fiesta. Unsurprisingly, it was Britain’s cheapest brand new car by some margin, while surprisingly it really wasn’t that bad to drive courtesy of the 903cc Fiat engine from the 127 era – better in fact than the more modern Yugo Sana. Subaru – or rather, Fuji Heavy Industries – had already been in the car business for some time when the Impreza was launched, having become established as a car producer in 1958. Starting out with microcars, Subaru eventually entered the mainstream and its first model to be sold in any numbers here in the UK was the Leone. For an unremarkable-looking car it was in fact pretty novel, running a water-cooled flat-four engine and optionally available with four-wheel drive.
