The end of the (sailing) affair
Boatbuilder Alex Laird in La Ciotat, France, recently unearthed this letter to his mother, who apparently had offered to teach the novelist Graham Greene to sail his 32ft, 8-Tonne Gauntlet yacht Nausikaa, built in 1939. We featured the yacht after an exemplary rebuild, back in 2014. Alex explains: “Below is the letter to my mother – Joan Beale then Laird, nee Hepworth at Oulton Broad, noted helmswoman sailing mostly at Lowestoft then Itchenor pre and post-war with all those fun pioneering dinghy people (Stewart Morris, Uffa Fox, Bruce Banks, Peter Scott, Charles & Bobbie Currey), hence perhaps her link to Graham Greene.” The letter, dated 30 December 1949, lists Greene’s address as 5 St James’s St, London SW1 and is dated 30 December 1949.…
