The department of correctional services has dismissed talk of plans to transfer more than 600 offenders from overcrowded prisons in Limpopo to select centres in North West, saying such a proposal had not yet been given to national commissioner for correctional services Arthur Fraser for approval. City Press was reliably informed earlier this week that Takalani Mashamba, the department’s acting deputy regional commissioner for Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, had intended to transfer 607 offenders from Thohoyandou and Polokwane. One very welcome consequence of the Covid-19 coronavirus lockdown is the decrease in crime, as Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed this week. Cele compared crime trends between March 29 and April 22 last year and March 27 and April 20 this year, and said that crime had plummeted by 69.4%. He said he would give a comprehensive crime picture after the lockdown, but he lauded the decrease in contact crimes – such as murder, attempted murder and sexual offences – and trio crimes, such as carjackings, house robberies and business robberies. Domestic crimes had dropped from 9 990 cases last year to 3 061 this year. This should all be excellent news, especially for a nation plagued by crime. These are times of imminent danger and, to combat panic, crucial information needs to be readily available to the public. Most of this information should be disseminated by the media. As journalists, it’s our job to bring news consumers the most pressing stories around the Covid-19 coronavirus. An emphasis should be placed on pressing stories as I’ve seen some stories which, in my opinion, were not essential, yet fellow journalists left the safety of their homes for live interviews with the subjects of these stories. It’s baffling that editors are approving such face-to-face interviews for stories that really could be done over the phone. Sandile Mtshiki is an innovator and an inventor at heart. Rewind to 21 years ago, when Mtshiki owned a company called Traditional Games, through which he manufactured indigenous African board games, such as Diketo and Morabaraba. These brought him local and international recognition at innovation summits and they sold successfully at curio shops. He also had partnerships with the departments of education, and arts and culture. In 2002, his work in African indigenous games was even referenced as part of an English module workbook exercise for Project Literacy: Adult Education and Training programme. Limpopo has abandoned a ground-breaking initiative – telemedicine or telehealth – that could be useful as the world grapples with the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. Many countries, such as Britain, the US and Canada, have been ramping up virtual patients’ visits and advocating the telemedicine case during this time that requires social distancing to curb the spread of the virus. Telemedicine is the delivery of medical care at a distance, using technological platforms such as video conferencing, emails and telephones. Limpopo launched its telemedicine project as far back as 2007, but it was abandoned. There are growing concerns around the handling of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic in the Eastern Cape, resulting in Health Minister Zweli Mkhize being forced to intervene. The controversies range from patients who tested positive for Covid-19 being accommodated in a B&B owned by the daughter of Eastern Cape Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe, called Mioca B&B, without the knowledge of the health department. That arrangement was cancelled following a public outcry and the 18 patients were transferred to Glen Grey Hospital, where they again received a raw deal as nurses refused to treat them because they did not have personal protective equipment (PPE). A tow truck bore evidence of violent protests from the previous day as the North West premier’s convoy drove into Boikhutso township in Lichtenburg on Wednesday. The assassination of a police watchdog investigator at his farm in east Pretoria last month was ordered and paid for by the police, a hitman has alleged. Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) investigator Mandla Mahlangu was shot and killed in a suspected hit disguised as an armed robbery. Would it be possible for me to do my job and protect myself from contracting the Covid-19 coronavirus at the same time? Once the lockdown was in effect, I quickly realised that the answer to this question was ambiguous. Yes, I would still tell stories and, yes, I would be able to protect myself by practising social distancing on the ground and using the personal protective equipment provided by my company – but this all comes at a price.
