To-date,-just-over-100-athletes-fromvarious- sporting- codes- have- bookedtheir-provisional-berths-in-Team-SA,-andthe- SA- Sports- Confederation- andOlympic- Committee- (Sascoc)- isexpecting-to-take-a-200-member-squadto-Japan-based-on-its-relaxed-qualifyingcriteria.
Sprinter-Akani-Simbine-is-one-of-theprominent- athletes- who- have- alreadyqualified,- alongside- the- Under-23national- football- team,- and- the- men’sand-women’s-hockey-teams.
However,- the- postponement- ofqualification-events-has-put-a-spannerin-the-works-for-some,-such-as-defendingOlympic-champion-Wayde-van-Niekerk, who- has- just- returned- to- competitionfollowing-a-long-injury-layoff.-The-400mworld- record-holder- is- yet- to- run- thequalifying- time- of- 44.90- seconds- tojustify-his-place-in-the-team,-even-thoughSascoc-has-already-included-him-in-itspreparatory-squad.
