This week we travel down to the Eastern Cape, where Maqoma and his amaThembu settled closer to the Koonap River. In July 1828, a bill called Ordinance 49 was brought out which allowed black workers from east of the Keiskamma into the colony. Maqoma vehemently rejected the bill, which he saw as another way of forcing his people into slavery. He lived in constant fear of a raid on his own villagers.
Sure enough, raids began, the first led by Major William near present-day Mthatha. In this expedition, 100 so-called Fetcani, or refugees, were captured. In August 1828 a force of British infantry, the Cape Mounted Rifles, a commando of settlers and mounted Koi mercenaries joined up with warriors from Hintsa’s Gcaleka, Vusani’s Thembu and Faku’s Mpondo.
