THE ASSOCIATION OF Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit is a biannual meeting, attended by the leaders of ten Southeast Asian states. Member countries comprise Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The organisation focuses on regional development of economics, politics, security and socio-cultural goals. The first ASEAN Summit was held in 1976 and since then they have been integral to negotiating free trade agreements, the enhancement of political and social cooperation among states, addressing humanitarian crises and climate change, and developing frameworks for disaster response and public health crises.
This year, Malaysia is host to both the 46th and 47th summits, held in May and November in Kuala Lumpur.
