THE BIGGEST challenge for the World Trade Organization, or WTO, is its own existence. The biggest threat comes from the US, which has already pulled out of several multilaterals, including Trans-Pacific Partnership, North American Free Trade Agreement, and commitments made at COP 21 to cut carbon emissions. At the 11th ministerial conference of the WTO at Buenos Aires, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer questioned several WTO procedures and stalled the permanent solution on public stockholding for food security. About a decade ago, we invested time in finding out how various stakeholders, including our employees, viewed our group, and what the reasons for its continued growth were. Samsung’s latest Gear Sport is made of stainless steel, and has a vibrant 1.2-inch circular OLED touchscreen display with a rotating bezel and two side buttons. It has a water resistance rating of 50 metres. While the watch looks stunning, the watch band, measuring 20 mm, isn’t very comfortable to wear for longer durations. It is replaceable though. Rotating the bezel to the left of the home screen displays app notifications, and rotating it to the right shows the calories burnt, steps walked, the number of floors climbed, heart rate, etc. It is good at tracking workout activities be it running, cycling, swimming or crunches. ROLLING OUT the optical fibre network across the country is costly and time consuming. The Department of Telecom recently decided to auction airwaves in V and E bands for faster broadband networks, taking a different stand from regulator TRAI, which had suggested that these airwaves be allotted on an annual fixed-fee basis. V and E are high-frequency bands with low coverage. These are ideal for transmitting large amounts of data (1,000 megabit persecond) between two mobile towers. They can replace the need for optic fibre cable between towers in a more cost-efficient way. These bands could help companies build broadband infrastructure faster, especially in terrains where optical fibre can’t reach. AFTER being inducted in the Wassenaar Arrangement Export Control Regime, India is set to seek membership of Australia Group as well. This is an informal group of countries that works to harmonise controls to ensure that export of critical chemicals doesn’t lead to development of chemical or biological weapons. If India applies, the candidature will be discussed at the next plenary to be held in Paris from June 4-8 2008. The move comes after India became a member of the Missile Technology Control Regime and the Wassenaar Arrangement.  Bankers and prospective bidders of distressed assets are slugging it out over the valuation of businesses under the bankruptcy code. There is a provision for providing only ‘liquidation value’ under the code, which is a worstcase scenario, if there is no resolution. But ‘liquidation value’ has actually ended up becoming a starting point for buyers to bid. This is creating lot of anxiety in the banking community as a lower bid price means higher haircuts on loans. While there is no provision for ‘enterprise value’ under the code, bankers are lobbying for a clause insertion. This would cover assets, especially in sectors such as steel and real estate, that have better value than, say, assets of an EPC business or an infrastructure player. One of the earliest tasks given to me in my youth was to control petrol bills of drivers at home. I took to the task in earnest, made a large sheet to diligently capture details of kilometres run daily and fuel refilled and so on. I would then question the drivers. This went on for six months and I had systematically wasted half hour each day on this task.
