In terms of per capita consumption, though, we lag way behind the developed nations. The Indian per capita consumption of milk at 97 litres per year is far behind the US, where the per capita consumption is 285 litres per year, or the EU’s 281 litres per year. The organised market is worth at least 80,000 crore, while the total market – which includes all the unorganised, unbranded players – is estimated to be worth a humongous 5,00,000 crore.
