When its owners bought a new apartment in Monaco's most upscale neighbourhood, it was immaculate but sterile. They enlisted London-based interior designers Elicyon to help transform the 885-square-metre space in Larvotto into a serene and sophisticated home-from-home. “When we took it on, it was beautiful, but lacking soul and personality,” says Holly Beazley, Elicyon's creative director. The client liked relaxed, quiet luxury and a neutral colour palette, which was achieved by a mix of antique and bespoke furnishings, with custom rugs to create softness underfoot and upgraded lighting. On my first visit to Milan Design Week back in 2014, I was struggling to understand the enormity of what I was seeing. It was hard to find the joy, I'll admit, in trekking across town in blazing heat to look at, say, a table. Every working day, commuters hurry past Phi in London's Canary Wharf. Few people Google her anymore, this big blue yacht covered with scaffolding and roofed by corrugated sheeting that has been lying here for years, becoming part of the scenery. If they did, they would discover that Phi, the longest sub-500GRT superyacht ever built, is the glamorous centrepiece of a hugely ambitious project. MARSEILLE On the sunlit shop windows of Marseille, it's difficult to miss the great cubes of olive-toned soap, stacked up like pyramids, their surfaces chalky with salt bloom. Imprinted into each one is a stamp with bold letters arranged in a circle or square, denoting the maker's name, the ingredients and the city. To most, it's just soap. But Savon de Marseille is far more than that. For centuries, the almost comically large blocks have been made the same way, using local olive oil, seawater from the Mediterranean and alkaline ash from local sea plants.
