The best-laid plans can go astray, but sometimes the alternate route is for the better. It seems like a lifetime ago, broker Alastair Callender, of Moravia Yachting connected me with the Northwind's former owner, a film-maker with a romantic streak and a startup (page 110). He was then looking for the yacht's next caretaker and unsure of what course he should take. I listened to the pitch, researched the yacht a bit, and soon was on a cross-country flight to LA to meet the owner and jump on board. Multihulls are having a moment. In the five years between 2020 and 2024, BOAT International's Global Order Book, which counts all superyachts over 24 meters (78 feet) LOA on order or in build, recorded more than a three-fold increase in the number of multihull projects. For the most part, the annual figure rose steadily from 22 in 2020 to 34 in 2021, 42 in 2022 and 50 in 2023. However, 2024 saw the number in development jump to a record 72 units. After a picturesque drive along a clifftop that's meandering enough to challenge even the strongest stomach, I am greeted by a view that has drawn the world's superyachts to the Amalfi Coast for decades. Positano's terracotta rooftops spill down to a crescent black-sand beach, with the faint outline of Capri ahead, cloaked in a soft haze. All 55 rooms at Il San Pietro and its two restaurants offer various angles on this beautiful vista, which inspired Carlo “Carlino” Cinque to create the hotel back in 1970. The hotel's design would have stirred Antoni Gaudí's imagination with its curvaceous form (though it was Oscar Niemeyer who influenced Cinque's designs). St John's Co-Cathedral, in the heart of Malta's capital city of Valletta, presents an austere exterior by the standards of Catholic architecture, with two boxy towers and a central door flanked by pillars. There's not much to see on the outside (it would seem), and most visitors file straight inside for the vaulted ceilings, adorned with paintings by the Italian artist Mattia Preti.
