The BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards puts a spotlight on the specialist design skills of the industry's most talented teams, highlighting innovative and forward-thinking yacht design. This year was no exception, as the judges rewarded boats that presented new ideas, while still holding on to principles that made for cohesive and pleasing design. To win over our expert panel of judges, it was not enough to showcase novelty for novelty's sake — design innovations must be something that will move the industry forward as a whole. The winners of the BOAT Artistry & Craft Awards, in association with Parkway England, were also announced at the Superyacht Design Festival. The awards celebrate the behind-the-scenes artisans that spend hours creating the finer details that bring a superyacht interior to life. The first award, for Excellence in Craftsmanship, went to Céline Alexandre. Céline Sorigue, artistic director of Céline Alexandre, was commissioned by Reymond Langton Design to create decorative panels for Kismet. It was inspired by haute couture and depicts a flight of ginkgo leaves, symbols of hope, strength, and resilience. The recipient of this year's award may not be a designer, but there are few people who know more about yacht design, and who have worked as tirelessly to propel the industry forward, than award-winning journalist Marilyn Mower. Summers spent plying Lake Michigan on board her father's mahogany runabout gave Mower an early taste for the boating life. Then during her studies at the University of South Florida she began racing competitively, crewing as a bowman. While working for a newspaper in St Petersburg, Florida, she was tapped to fill in for their sportswriter to cover Olympic class regattas. Most of us have a younger self, a favorite childhood toy or formative experience we're yearning to get back to, and now there's a boat for that: the new 154ft, explorer-style King Benji. Dozens of nuclear reactor designs are in the frame for the high seas, but not all are close to being technically ready. A recent European Maritime Safety Agency report earmarks three varieties of value for commercial shipping: molten salt, high-temperature gas and pressurized water reactors.
