Formerly known as Project Venus with keel laid in November 2022, the voluminous 180-foot yacht (at 760GT) has a slender FDHF hull by Van Oossanen Naval Architects, a “masculine” exterior by Omega Architects and an interior by Luca Dini Design & Architecture. Ever since I read Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey at school, I’ve worshipped Odysseus. He was the Greek genius who cooked up the idea of the Trojan Horse to capture the city of Troy and defeat the Trojans. So I was determined to follow in his footsteps — or his wake — from Troy, on Turkey’s Aegean coast, to his island kingdom, Ithaca in the Ionian Sea. My God, I would have been irritated by Odysseus’s delays. An outpouring followed the recent announcement of Paolo Vitelli’s death. A giant of the nautical world, the founder of Azimut-Benetti died at the age of 77. He started Azimut, initially a boat rental company, when he was 21, using the proceeds from his first venture, a nightclub, to finance his passion for boating. He got into boatbuilding (through subcontractors first) with the goal to produce economical but reliable made-in-Italy boats. The yachts grew in the 80s (with the notable launch of the 105-foot Failaka, the first fiberglass yacht of its size), which is also when Vitelli acquired Benetti (in 1985), a historic shipyard based in Viareggio.
