It seems every day we receive astonishing news of projects pushing boundaries in every direction, lengthwise, beam-wise and upward. In this issue's special section dedicated to catamarans, you will read that Australia's Echo Yachts is building an 187ft sailing catamaran; the release did not disclose the beam, but even with a sailing cat, that's got to translate to some extraordinary volume. GOING GLOBAL The American owner of Damien Yachting's latest Yacht Support vessel plans a multi-year world tour on the aptly named exploration platform Five Oceans Launched in Antalya, Turkey and sporting blue and orange livery, the 175 ft Five Oceans is the second in Damen Yachting's Yacht Support 53 series (after Bad Company). An evolution of a commercial platform by Damen, the Yacht Support is more tool than luxury yacht. For this owner, it is perfect for ocean exploration. “You can sleep on it, fly off of it and move it. 2024 OCEAN AWARDS The winners WINNER SCIENCE AWARD Pacific Dungeness crabs feed a lucrative industry in the US. These delicacies account for more than 25 percent of California's $200 million commercial fishing industry's revenues. But humpback whales and sea turtles often become entangled in the lines that connect the bottom traps with surface buoys. Calls for regulations threatened the local economy. Extensive research, which required developing a computer model to analyze and compare data from various management strategies, as well as whale behavior and crab populations, showed fewer lines was the way to go. Christopher Free says, “Reducing the amount of gear allocated to the fishermen outperformed a lot of the more complex management strategies,” and a 30 percent reduction proved the most efficient with the least impact on fishing. As I was touring the new Infynito 90 from Ferretti Yachts at the Cannes Yachting Festival last year, I started thinking about dinosaur bones. Ironically, the reason this boat had me contemplating fossils was because it is so forward-thinking. The yacht's foredeck design is what the builder is calling an “All-Season Terrace” and when you are standing in it, with rib-like tilting louvers overhead, it feels a bit like you are inside a dinosaur skeleton. Open on the sides, the structure creates a winter garden in a space where you would rarely find one. Military vessels have been powered by smell nuclear reactors for years, but a new breed of thorium reactors could allow the technology to break into the commercial domain, according to the Norwegian shipbuilder Ulstein. Ulstein is a big hitter. So people took note when the company published a concept in 2022 for a thorium-powered ship that could act as a mobile charging station for electric cruise ships. Called Thor, the ship's heart is a 30MW molten salt reactor, or MSR. Put Fukushima out of your mind for a second: the technology required can fit in an concrete box 26ft wide and 26ft tall.
