Success in the VC world has allowed Todd Chaffee to step into his next chapter of philanthropy and also launch a luxury tequila. “When I researched the spirits industry, I discovered that most tequilas are full of fake colors, artificial sugars and glycerin,” he says. This inspired him to create a 100 percent natural, additive-free tequila that was smooth and easy to drink. He and his team met with the top distilleries in Mexico, eventually collaborating with Enrique Fonseca and his nephew Sergio Mendoza, two of the most respected master distillers in the industry. “Enrique and Sergio have deep, multi-generational knowledge of the agave plant. As the most destructive storm to hit the northern island group in recorded history, Hurricane Dorian brought 185mph sustained winds and a 23ft storm surge that washed away most buildings. This was in 2019 and “the boating capital of the Bahamas” is still recovering. “The marinas are back close to the water, but as you get off the water you can still see there's a ton of damage. [Recovery] is slow, but it's coming,” says Carl Allen of Walker's Cay. From a boater's standpoint though, there is plenty to return to. Every large-yacht marina has reopened better than before. OWNERS’ CLUB My family always had boats. I remember our first boat was a 1966 Senior 26. I was eight at the time and we sailed her around southern England where I lived until I was about 40 years old. We had a family business there and I expanded to Thailand in 2005. The cost of chartering in the Bahamas went up significantly mid-2022 when the country instated a 10 percent VAT on the charter value in addition to the existing four percent charter fee, creating a bit of a stir in the industry.
