A renewed interest in fast cars took over my boat obsession for a few days in May with the arrival of the second Miami Grand Prix. There is so much synergy between Formula 1 and the yachting world. WORK IN PROGRESS Hybrid propulsion will be a defining feature of CRN143, says Cecile Gauert Ferretti recently offered a behind-the-scenes look at the transport of the steel-hulled CRN143, also known as Project Maranello, as it arrived at the Ferretti Superyacht Yard in Ancona, Italy, for outfitting. The 219ft yacht was designed in and out by Nuvolari Lenard, working with CRN and the owners’ representatives, brokers Moran Yacht & Ships. Although Nuvolari Lenard has worked on many projects with CRN, this marks the first time Moran has worked with the Italian shipyard. Sold in 2021, Maranello will have five decks for 14 guests and 17 crew, a helipad, forward tender garage and a large beach club. WILD WATER ON BOARD It started innocently enough on a beach in Anguilla over a barbecue lunch. A group of yacht owners were chatting about one of their favorite topics - their boats. I wasn’t eavesdropping exactly; let’s just say, I got interested. Next thing I know, I am in West Palm Beach looking for Robin’s Nest, a gorgeous Vanquish 45 with metallic gray paint, red boot stripe and vibrant blue cushions. She is easy to spot with her quad Mercury Verado 600hp V12 outboards and nicely angular hardtop. She is the first VQ45 built this way. It all started back in 1903, when the 54GT El Paso was registered and George Town first became a British Port of Registry, known as the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry (CISR). We got involved with boats the old-fashioned way - my father in his infinite wisdom bought a 16ft Lapstrake fishing boat with a 25-horsepower Evinrude engine. Instead of using it to fish, we used it to water ski on Lake Ontario, in western New York. We were a large Italian family, very close, and we enjoyed the heck out of it. “We think of her as a performance megayacht” As I step into the cockpit of the Galeon 800 Fly on an already hot morning during last fall’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, MarineMax’s Galeon brand manager and my guide, Robert Burke, is called away urgently to meet a potential client. Focus on Turquoise Turquoise Yachts threw open its doors in April to show off its two Turkish shipyards in Kocaeli (metal construction) and in Pendik (outfitting). The waterfront locations allow transferring in-build projects in just 24 hours by barge. The Pendik site (on the Asian side of the Bosphorus) is home to the design, engineering, production, and sales department Currendy, the shipyard has seven in-build sail and motor yacht projects from a 138-footer (a yacht started at Perini Navi) to a custom 285-footer, which upon completion will be the largest yacht built in Turkey. You don’t need to be a motor sport fan to have heard of British Racing Green (BRG) - but there are plenty of people who might not know the story behind the dark, but unspecific, shade. It dates back to a pale “shamrock” green being used to signify the origins of the English-built Napier driven by Selwyn Edge at the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup, the color being chosen as a mark of gratitude to the event’s Irish hosts.
