We celebrate the good life this month (don’t we always?). But this issue is most particularly about rewards. First, we salute the designers, builders, captains and superyacht owners who created and launched some outstanding yachts in an incredibly complicated time for us all. I was thrilled to be in London’s magnificent Guildhall to help recognize the 2022 World Superyacht Awards winners. You can read about all the victorious yachts on page 53. We also celebrate the good life through the enjoyment of food and wine – a good part of yachting is all about fine dining, after all. REVEALING THE LATEST NEWS, TRENDS AND TECH Domus, the Latin word for a palatial home, is the fitting name of this new 131ft sailing trimaran concept by Van Geest Design and naval architect Rob Doyle. Beyond its striking looks, it offers excellent potential as a sustainably minded platform for extended cruising without using any fossil fuels. Comfort, meanwhile, is maximized thanks to limited heeling. A trimaran, Doyle says, is easier and less expensive to build than a catamaran – with all systems concentrated in the middle hull, instead of split over two – and offers even more space, as well as connection to the environment. Rather fittingly for a collection of gems that could be lifted straight out of a fairy tale, Graff’s latest high jewelry offering will come in chapters. Called Graffabulous, the extensive collection counts more than 80 one-of-a-kind pieces, totaling over 3,600 carats of diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires, and will be divided into six separate releases. “Graffabulous is a true celebration of color, ” says design director Anne-Eva Geffroy. “Our high jewelry creations are always inspired by the stones, but we also have the complete freedom to create and the liberty to experiment. We’ve all heard the crazy stories – Caribbean charter guest sends private jet to Japan for prized cantaloupe – and for a long time it was common for superyacht chefs to fly food in from every comer of the globe. Fortunately, times arc changing, and the future of provisioning is looking more sustainable as planet-conscious chefs seek out methods of sourcing inherently greener produce. The approach is multifaceted, from relying on local produce to futuristic onboard cultivating. Silent Pool Distillers produce artisan spirits from a series of restored farm buildings in the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Park in the UK. Its most spectacular release to date? This two-gallon bottle of its signature Silent Pool Gin. For the one-off creation, the company partnered with luxury glassware company Dartington Crystal, which created a hand-blown crystal bottle modeled on the classic 23 fl oz counterpart and etched with intricate botanical motifs. The bottle, and a matching set of Darlington martini and Copa glasses, are housed in a bespoke trunk by Bordeaux-based master French trunk maker Ephtée. My love for classic boats started when I was II years old, when my father took me sailing on a 24ft Howard Chapelle sloop on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. I had been out on small boats before, but this was a whole new thing. Later I started racing scows, dinghies and small keelboats, and after college and moving to New York, I started buying classic boats and never stopped. I think my first classic boat was a 25ft Rhodes Idler. I rebuilt it and, after college, sailed it from Annapolis to Key Largo, which put wanderlust in my veins. Sacha Lichine can claim to be one of the principal architects of the great rose wine renaissance. He created the hugely successful Whispering Angel brand, a wine that’s oneof the collection of roses from Chateau d’Esclans in Provence, France. He owns Snappers, a Tecnomarine built in Viareggio, Italy, in 1983, which is moored at Cogolin, near Saint-Tropez, and mostly used as a dayboat for customers and friends. The two most collectable watches of 2022 both have maritime links – the shape of Patek Philippe’s Nautilus is said to have been based on a ship’s porthole, while the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak took its form from a diving helmet.
