Last year was a record-breaker for brokerage transactions, eclipsing 2020’s pandemic-induced record and racking up the highest number of sales since records began in 2008. A total of 723 sales were recorded in 2021, representing a 71.7 percent increase on the 421 recorded in 2020. Motor sales dominated once again, with a total of 684 motor yachts changing hands, while the remaining 39 were sailing yachts. Asking prices rose too, to an average of €10.4 million ($11.7m), but this was inflated by the big-ticket sales of yachts, including Lürssen’s 414ft Octopus, which was asking €235 million, and the 282ft Oceanco yacht Man of Steel, listed with an asking price of €131 million. Even air is getting an upgrade. Will Faimatea, founder of Bond TM, cites pathogen-detection devices, recently unveiled by healthcare startup Poppy, as one the most exciting modern innovations. The technology is currently being rolled out in Europe and specified on some new yacht builds. “The ability to detect not only Covid-19, but any airborne particle with DNA, viruses, bacteria and mold, will add a new level of security from a health perspective,” he says. Perhaps surprisingly, pathogen detection isn’t the preserve of larger vessels. “I expect us to have the lab test equipment to process the Poppy device by the end of February in our Monaco and Barcelona offices,” he says. “This will be the size of a shoebox and will not need a lab technician to operate.”…

You have to accept that an electric tender is going to be slower than an internal-combustion engine boat,” says Ernest Menten, co-founder of Dutch builder Tenderworks. Even state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries supply just 10 percent of the power that fuel amounting to the same weight would, so electric tenders need frequent charging and are more expensive. After launching in 2017, Vita Power designed several electric concept boats, which proved hugely successful in the Yacht Club de Monaco’s Energy Boat Challenge. The new 34ft Lien built by French yard JFA Yachts is the first production dayboat. “Built in carbon, the fit-out of the boat is neat,” Montigneaux says. “We see here the experience of the superyacht builder. Her layout is very classic, with large sunpads aft followed by a cockpit with seven seats to cruise comfortably.” The cockpit converts into a U-shaped dining area, and a little cabin forward offers a double bed and a dayhead. “I especially liked the beautiful work done to link the deck and bathing platform,” he says. As usual, the 2021 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was littered with glitzy and architectural tours de force. There was the 252ft Feadship Boardwalk towering above show-goers with her Airbus H130 chopper sitting like heavy fruit on her after decks. There was the Ocean Alexander 35R, with a gleaming interior by Evan K Marshall that was so impressive it won a Best of Show award. But for my money, the most talked-about vessel at the show measured a mere 22ft long and cost about $249,000. Robin says that you can’t always expect a quick turnaround when it comes to budgeting time in the yard. “For the technologies we manage [AV, IT, satcoms, security, UHF, nav coms, HVAC and lighting], I don’t think any truly meaningful improvements are possible in two or three weeks of downtime,” he cautions. “That said, our Support Services division routinely helps solve problems during these short downtime windows. A brief refit is a great opportunity to get in and do tightly focused repairs and upgrades, provided the planning starts three to six months before the yacht ends up in the yard.
