What a year it has been. The whole superyacht business stumbled in March 2020, but found its feet that summer and has been on a tear ever since. This year has obliterated all boat sales records and, as of writing, this relentless pace shows no sign of slowing. Collaborations between watch makers and car marques have been plentiful, and many watches have been inspired by yachts, yachting, races and regattas, too. However, tie-ups between specific boat makers and well-known dial names are few and far between. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only direct partnership between a watch house and a boat builder in recent years was that formed between Parmigiani Fleurier and Pershing in 2007 – a deal that has now petered out. REVEALING THE LATEST NEWS, TRENDS AND TECH A new Vitruvius has been launched at Feadship for an experienced owner. A motor yacht designed by sailboat aficionado and naval architect Philippe Briand with the intent to maximize range, self refiance and efficiency, the 180ft Shinkai was built for a repeat client around submarine exploration. The 7.3-tonne, three-passenger sub (a U-Boat Worx C-Explorer 3) was the starting point of the design. It had to fit on the aft deck, along with a massive crane that could launch it in all sea states. The deck also accommodates a limo tender and an all-terrain vehicle. Italian fashion brand Tod’s has joined farces with celebrated New Jersey artist Willie Cole – who creates his pieces by putting together a wide array of pre-existing objects from shoes to bicycle parts – on a project called Artcycling. There is something intensely magical about the act of restoration: the feat of rescuing something that has fallen into a state of disrepair and returning it to its original condition. For owners there is a process of falling completely for the yacht – something which compels them. British sailor Tracey Edwards recalls how restoring the yacht that became Maiden ceased to be purely about practicalities. “I fell in love with her,” she remembers.
