Judging this year’s World Superyacht Awards proved a little challenging. Usually our judges – all but two of whom are current or former supeiyacht owners – would personally inspect the majority of the nominated boats, but with border restrictions, quarantine rules, last-minute flight cancellations and myriad other difficulties, it’s a minor miracle that any of this year’s nominees were seen at all. But despite all this, the judges still managed to get on board more than half of this year’s entries, in order to run their discerning eye over the fit-out, or meet an owner in person, or interrogate a captain. A star is reborn Leopard Yachts’ customized 118ft model will be relaunched by Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard. Up to three vessels a year will be produced by the refit, repair and construction yard in Pisa, Italy. “There’s a great business case to revive such a strong brand,” says Leopard Yachts brand manager Carlo Pittis. “We don’t have to build it from scratch because it is well known. Monaco may already boast more Michelin-starred restaurants per square foot than any other location on the planet, but that hasn’t stopped another illustrious chef from joining the party. Parisianborn Yannick Alleno, who has tallied up an impressive 13 stars since founding his company in 2008, has taken the helm of what was formerly Le Vistamar at the Hotel Hermitage. A helipad, a larger beach club and spa, and a 23ft swimming pool are among the new features on board the Amels flagship Here Comes The Sun, which was delivered in 2017. A one-year refit at Damen Yachting extended the yacht by nearly 20ft from the stem, bringing the boat’s new length to 292ft and boosting her volume up to 2,977GT. A third of all 1oo-meter-plus (328ft-plus) pre-owned superyacht sales since 2011 have occurred in 2021, which is another significant milestone in what has already been a record breaking year for brokerage transactions. Just six such superyachts have sold through brokers since 2011 according to BOAT Pro data, with two of those transactions taking place in the first eight months of 2021. Prior to Octopus, the 414ft Lürssen motor yacht that sold with an asking price of €235 million ($278111) in August after around 700 days on the market, the 344ft Blohm+Voss Lady Moura changed hands with an asking price of $125 million, 554 days after going on sale. The family that commissioned the 179ft Baglietto named C certainly seems to think so.
