RULES AND METHODOLOGY The Global Order Book was established in 1992 by ShowBoats International (now BOAT International US Edition) to provide a body of data, updated annually and systematically, that shows the scope of economic activity in the superyacht industry. Each year we present a list of yachts 24 meters (78’ 8”) and longer on order or in build as of September 1 at shipyards throughout the world. Every effort is made to ensure accurate, comprehensive data. Whenever possible, data is cross-referenced with other industry sources and in many cases is corroborated with personal visits to shipyards. The brokerage market, often the superyacht industry’s bellwether, ended 2019 strongly and started 2020 in a bullish fashion, with January and February eclipsing the same period the year before with a 10.6 percent rise in sales. Then Covid-19 hit, lockdowns were applied and the brokerage market all but shut up shop. Just 62 sales were recorded between March and May, down 44.6 percent from the previous year. June was better and the period through to the end of August, our GOB year-end, saw 100 boats sold on the brokerage market, up 1 percent on the previous year. As the global economy plunges into its deepest recession since World War II, and the Covid-19 pandemic places unprecedented restrictions on how people and businesses can work, the superyacht industry has had to adapt rapidly. This Global Order Book reveals a record number of superyachts in build exceeding 100 meters (328ft). There are 23 projects of 100-meters-plus (including two on hold) scheduled for delivery between now and 2025. Lürssen remains the champion in this category with seven 100-meter-plus projects, two of which are scheduled for delivery next year. Fellow German yards Abeking & Rasmussen, Lloyd Werft and Nobiskrug also have 100-meter-plus projects on their books. In the Netherlands, Feadship has just shipped a 118-meter (387ft) project into one of its sheds, Amels has announced a 120-meter (393ft) order and Oceanco has an impressive order book of five 100-meter-plus giants. Looking back over Fabio Salini’s past, it’s as if the Italian designer was destined to become the yacht owner’s jeweler of choice.
