Head to the end of Boston’s Freedom Trail and you’ll find “Old Ironsides” berthed on the Mystic River. Her colorful past includes participation in the American Civil War, plus a circumnavigation in the 1840s. The world’s oldest active naval ship, she still performs gun drills on her annual cruise.

Admiral Lord Nelson’s warship was almost sunk during the Battle of Trafalgar. Unlike Horacio, however, the vessel survived the fight and visitors are now welcome to walk over the original decks in Portsmouth, where she stands in a dry dock. Just next door is Tudor ship the Mary Rose, which was restored after 400 years under the sea.
