China’s 21st-century love affair with luxury is well documented, but anyone with an interest in the country’s rich history will know that its appreciation of intricate artisanship is nothing new. Way back in the 1770s, for example, a Swiss clockmaker called Pierre Jaquet-Droz was summoned to China after the Qianlong Emperor heard he was able to create mannequins that could play musical instruments, draw and write. A shadow was cast across the motor-racing world back in April with news of the death of Sir Stirling Moss. He was regarded by many as one of the greatest drivers of all time, despite never having won a world championship – a situation more than made up for by his numerous victories and even more epic drives as a team member for a raft of marques. I grew up in Great Neck, New York, near the Merchant Marine Academy. My family were not boaters, it was all me. I loved the water. When I was 17, I got myself a Montauk 17, a Boston Whaler with a 115hp outboard engine, and just was enjoying myself as an amateur water skier. Shoals of golden jack, canary-yellow pufferfish and electric blue damselfish flit past as the sun’s rays create shimmering reflections in the gin-clear water. I once had a very nice captain, but he’d often have far too much to drink. One day, he crossed the line with his drunkenness, so I had to say goodbye to him – and quickly find a replacement. So I got an “emergency captain”, who turned out to be rather quirky.
