Horizon and its affiliate Atech Composites have used infusion to build parts in fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) for more than two decades. Not only has this been used for ever-stronger and lighter parts for yachts, but also for the energy and aerospace industries. Over time, the parts produced in a single shot have become increasingly larger, which translates to better integrity. The newest innovation, implemented in early 2020, consists of infusing hulls with all stringers and girders at once, which saves more weight and increases strength by an estimated 40 percent. Atech also now uses laser shearography, an optical measurement technique used in aerospace to detect bubbles or other imperfections.…

It’s early afternoon in the Dominican Republic and a big storm approaching from the north has piled mile-high clouds on top of the verdant hills of Puerto Plata. Guy Laliberté, his family and friends are waiting for a good weather window to meet up with his sailing yacht, Tiara, which is moored in the Silver Bank, about 80 nautical miles north east of Puerto Plata. It is the only private boat allowed to moor that winter in this spot of Atlantic where humpback whales find mates and give birth. When conditions are right, the whales sometimes come close enough to make eye contact with snorkelers. Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo has floated its newest addition to a growing portfolio of yachts. Recently launched was a 146ft all-aluminum fast displacement superyacht known as the 44Alloy (pictured above). The exterior by Sanlorenzo and Zuccon International Project derives from the desire to build a relatively low-tonnage yacht with four decks and an expansive private owner’s apartment spanning three levels. The owner’s space, which occupies around 1,560 square feet, also includes outdoor areas. Another interesting feature is a large beach club opening on three sides, which has become a hallmark on many Sanlorenzos in recent years. In spite of its generous spaces, the yacht’s gross tonnage is well below the 500GT threshold. Automotive marques don’t come more quintessentially English than Lotus, the legendary sports carmaker founded in London by the late, great Colin Chapman. But while the firm has been based in the UK for almost 55 years, for more than half of that time it has been in the hands of a string of overseas investors – most of whom struggled to re-establish it as an automotive force. I have been a property developer for the past 40 years and have owned several marinas, including Empire Marina in Bobbin Head near Sydney. I did a lot of water skiing when I was growing up, and when I moved to Sydney in my 20s I started playing with little boats. Then the boats got bigger. I had a 1992 Riva Superamerica 50 and then a Riva Aquarama, which I kept in the South of France. I loved my Rivas. I once met Carlo Riva, and he was a warm, erudite and very suave Italian. A metallic peppermint-blue recalling the Caribbean’s waters created in-house for the Amels 180’s brochure inspired the hull color. As the structures grew, designers also increased the size of windows. At Horizon this led to the FD series, and the new and appropriately named FD102 Skyline. When I see it, the new 102 is at the Horizon City Marina in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and the towers of the modern metropolis and a working harbor make for an interesting backdrop. The tropical topography of Big Scrub has plenty of Robinson Crusoe potential. But because the island is connected by an isthmus to the well-known resort of Scrub Island, a new owner would have a much easier task if they wanted to create their own tropical hideaway. The larger of the two linked islands, Big Scrub offers panoramic views over the Caribbean Sea and has two peaks – standing at 430ft and 310ft – from which to take full advantage of the vistas.
