No question, there are some owners whose first yacht measures 230ft. But the classic yachting “career” looks more like this: an owner starts small and “grows up” with their boats, gaining a few feet every few years until they reach the superyacht segment and buy a semi-custom boat between 80 and 100 feet. Of the 10,863 yachts longer than 80ft that have been delivered, 4,165 (or 38 percent) belong to this segment. For as long as there has been the sea and boats, intrepid parents have taken their children away from the confines of land and journeyed together over the horizon – but perhaps never more so than today. Our society is becoming more mobile, with work being done remotely from anywhere, and there’s a pervasive adventurous spirit that is changing the way people use their yachts. Ann Avery, yacht broker with Northrop & Johnson, has seen a shift towards family cruising. “Part of the reason is technology, namely VSAT, so families can really get away, including mothers and fathers who work. Victoria started sailing with her parents when she was just two years old. “They had to tie me to the cockpit table so I wouldn’t accidentally go overboard during rough weather.” So, as she points out, she really had no choice in the matter, but since she has grown up loving being in, on and around the water, there are no hard feelings. Look back at some of the greatest yachts in history, and you’ll notice that their menus hardly changed for decades. On April 13, 1912, for example, hours before RMS Titanic struck the iceberg that led to its tragic sinking, guests in first class would have enjoyed a lavish 10 courses of fine French cuisine – including oysters, pâté de foie gras and sirloin of beef with parmentier potatoes – that would still be at home on a superyacht today. Franco Loro Piana, son of the owner of the My Song sailing yachts Family time for the Loro Pianas has always meant time on a boat, sailing in the Mediterranean, mainly around Spain and Italy. In fact, Franco’s earliest memories are experiences on a boat.
