Global political events have cooled the superyacht brokerage market, causing a drop in sales in 2019. End of year results show that a total of 398 yachts of 24m (78ft) or more were sold in 2019, down from the 437 that changed hands in 2018 and the 433 recorded in 2017. The total asking price also took a hit, falling from 2018’s $5.29 billion to $4.14 billion. These days, though, superyacht designers are finding increasingly ingenious ways to squeeze every last cubic inch from their creations. It facilitates volunteer missions by luxury yachts to deliver humanitarian aid (such as water filters to the Galápagos) and urgent disaster relief (as seen recently when Drewelow’s partners ferried supplies to the Bahamas). The explorer yacht Qing undertook an aid mission to the Darién Gap, the inhospitable isthmus that separates Panama from Colombia. “We wrap a deckhand in aluminum foil and send him out to ‘tune the radar’” As the new season approaches and fresh crew members are recruited into the industry, we sometimes like to observe certain initiation rites. A favorite of mine is to instruct a novice deckhand to assist with the important task of “radar tuning.” This involves wrapping the deckhand in aluminum foil, fashioning a matching conical foil hat, and sending him or her out into port on a paddleboard, with a paddle similarly wrapped in silver foil. Using the VHF, the deckhand will be asked to adopt a range of poses and to brandish the paddle in various directions. Big on aluminum Royal Huisman kicked off 2020 with two major developments: the on-time launch of the world’s largest aluminum sailing yacht, Sea Eagle II, and the assembly of the hull and superstructure of the all-aluminum 180ft motor yacht known as Project Phi. Like most Turkish shipyards today, Mengi Yay had humble beginnings as a builder of small wooden craft for fishing and rowing. Its steady expansion into composite and metal boatbuilding has pushed the family-owned company into building 65ft to 100ft yachts. Never trust a black bear. This is the advice running through my mind as I watch a particularly large one dive under a log a few feet away from my perch on the riverbank. A grizzly bear, the apex predator round these parts, needs only to assert its dominance; a black bear, on the other hand, is the underdog, falling below grizzlies, cougars and wolves in the hierarchy.
