Brokers have responded positively to the superyacht industry’s half-year (H1) results, shrugging off news that the first half of 2019 saw the lowest number of sales since 2016. A total of 204 sales closed on the brokerage market in the first six months of the year, down from the 230 of mid-2018 and the 217 of H1 2017. Two brokers argued that the buoyancy of the market is more evident in the value of sales than the quantity. While the number of sales has decreased, the combined asking price of sales has crept up, from $2.03 billion in mid-2018 to $2.26 billion in 2019. “We should consider the total value of sales – one 150-metre [490ft] deal can be worth as much as seven to ten 164ft new builds,” says…

Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl was an academic in the Indiana Jones mold. He’s most famous for his 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition, in which he sailed an impressive 4,287 miles from Peru to French Polynesia on a traditional Peruvian balsa wood raft. Heyerdahl believed that similarities between the two cultures implied long-forgotten contact, and he wanted to prove that ancient South Americans could have made the journey across the Pacific, using the vessels they had at their disposal. Two decades later, the Ra expedition, named after the Egyptian sun god, aimed to establish a similar cultural diffusion between the ancient Mediterranean and South America. Voyager, the largest conversion project done in the US has left Florida for adventures far and wide. The transformation from offshore supply ship to an explorer yacht nearly 300 feet in length (based on a concept by Kirilloff & Associates with styling by Rafael Ochoa) began in 2015 with a 40ft hull extension in Louisiana. Among the many elements of Amadea’s immaculate interior, the hand-painted Pleyel piano stands out. This Paris piano builder has been in business since 1807, founded by a talented Austrian musician who adopted French nationality. Over two centuries, the brand has been embraced by artists from Chopin and Ravel to Daniil Trifonov and Vanessa Mosell today. Pleyel no longer manufactures pianos, but it still accepts occasional custom orders, such as this Directoire baby grand. The AC75 class yacht is a new concept of raceboat – a foiling monohull with “octopus arms” protruding out of the side for stability soft sails produced from carbon and driven by human power. Eleven sailors will race the AC75: a helmsman, main trimmer, foil trimmer and eight grinders who will balance tactics, sail trim and hydraulics. The human element in the AC75 will be impressive. Each sailor will need to maintain the highest possible level of cardio performance over a 35-minute race, which is roughly 35 percent longer than the races at the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda. If there was an owner’s manual for how to build a custom yacht, it would have to be written by Dan and Tanya Snyder. The design and build of their latest Lady S, a 305ft Feadship, has been a five-year adventure in delving into details, exploring all options, understanding every component and visiting every supplier. It was an exhaustive process but one they were willing to undertake – in fact were expecting to undertake – to get exactly the yacht they wanted. Dan has fond childhood memories of a canal boat holiday with his family in the UK while his father was researching a book. The icy routes around Cape Horn may have been navigated 400 years ago, but the Northwest Passage remained uncrossed by boat until 1906. It took the skills of Arctic explorer Roald Amundsen, sailing over successive summers, to weave from the Atlantic to the Pacific through some 36,000 islands in the Canadian Arctic. Since then, more people have stood on the summit of Everest than have traversed the passage by water.
