The headlines may be dominated by big-name NFL team owners and their huge new yachts, but across the spectrum we’re seeing good activity, from 80ft upwards. American superyacht yards have managed to shrug off concerns about escalating trade wars thanks to a buoyant domestic market, but new levies are clearly being felt in the smaller boat segment where export is key. The EU imposed a 25 percent tariff on US-built boats in June 2018 in response to US-enforced tariffs on steel and aluminum. Thom Dammrich, president of the US National Marine Manufacturers Association, said this is having a “devastating effect” on yards that rely on EU orders. He also warns of import issues: “Costs are rising not only for basic inputs like steel and aluminum but for many of the parts that are imported from China. There will soon be 25 percent tariffs on everything coming into the US from China.” But two US superyacht yards…

When talk turns to watches the inclination is to think Swiss, but Americans have an impressive horological history too. After all, it was the Waterbury Clock Company of Connecticut that brought the luxury of personalized timekeeping to the masses during the 1880s. It introduced the first inexpensive pocket watch and, under the management of Robert H Ingersoll, created the Yankee, also known as the dollar watch, which sold 40 million units. Waterbury became known as the Timex Corporation in 1944, and the Ingersoll dial name was famously used on the Mickey Mouse watches made under license from Disney. “It’s such a great name because it just says exactly the way you feel. You know, I Love This Boat,” says Hal Griffith, speaking about his 145ft Christensen. A raconteur and affable host, Griffith is generous with his time as he delves into his family business and extensive experience with boats. The 140 is the first Pershing in aluminum, which has its pros and cons. “Aluminum is different,” says designer Fulvio De Simoni. “You don’t pour it like GRP, you cut it from sheets of metal so shapes have to be more square and surfaces more flat. You get a good feel for the state of the market at yacht shows, and at Palm Beach this year the positivity was palpable. The restaurants and bars were full, the pontoons heavy with clients, but most importantly, business was being done – look no further than Risa Merl’s piece on p78 to discover just how much. It’s not all unalloyed good news, however; insiders will rightly point to the shrinking number of US shipyards producing superyachts, and the preference for some big-name US buyers to look to Europe for their dream boats. LUIZ “I came across Yihharn through the Oceanco Young Designer of the Year program. What caught my eye is that she was working with curves, as opposed to these geometric, angled yachts that everyone else was doing. Her design was fluid and very clean with well-defined volume, which is difficult to do on a large boat. You can stack decks, and do something clever with horizontal lines, but these organic shapes that Yihharn created are really challenging – there’s an intelligent simplicity to her style, and she knows what to leave out. I started sailing at the age of three on my parent’s 40ft sailboat. In 1970 I bought my own boat, a Soling, and raced in the Olympics for quite a while, then won some championships in high-performance sailboats. In 1997 I bought a 75ft Reichel/Pugh design called Zephyrus IV. We set four international offshore race records with that boat, followed by 86ft Zephyrus V, which broke a 32-year-old record racing from Fort Lauderdale to Montego Bay. But after all this competitive racing, life became more about family. Big-game fishing was never more glamorized than by Ernest Hemingway’s vivid dispatches from Cuba about mano-a-mano battles with great fish – “rising, shining dark blue and silver, seeming to come endlessly out of the water.” His beloved 38ft Pilar, purchased with the cash advance for an Esquire article, became the prototypical fishing machine, “sweet in any kind of sea.” Since that time, sportfishing boats have evolved into a distinct type, sometimes exaggerated into caricature. Michael Peters, who has designed many of the breed, takes a tongue-in-cheek poke at the “voodoo” that has evolved: acres of foredeck without non-skid surfaces; no bowrails (they’re for softies); and towers so tall there’s a risk of nosebleeds. Combining sun, sea and sustainability, this minimalist resort on Rhodes’ less explored south-east coast is an example of the historical island’s new wave of green architecture. Installing a 59ft yacht in the middle of Times Square in New York proved harder than cruising the ocean, but where there’s a will, there’s a way. The will was for Azimut Yachts to mark its 50th anniversary in the US, where it sells 25 percent of its production. The way was the Italian boatbuilder’s partnership with NYCxDesign and Design Pavilion, two annual events that celebrate design and innovation. Moving in required an engineering study and removing (and then replacing) all traffic lights in the way. Spotting a Pershing on the water is as easy as naming your favorite tune after the first few notes. What makes it so easy to recognize are those trademark exterior lines penned by Fulvio De Simoni. “Pershing boats have never been classic or conservative, that’s not their target,” De Simoni says. “They are fast and aggressive and are created for people who want to stand out from the crowd. Despite an escalating trade war with China, threats of tariffs against Mexico and an economic policy largely communicated via Twitter, consumer confidence in the United States today is sky high, tracking at levels not seen since before the global financial crisis. The effect this is having on superyacht sales is pronounced. In short, “the US market is dominating yacht sales at the moment,” according to Wes Sanford, sales broker for Northrop & Johnson. This is reflected in BOAT International’s own statistics, which put the value of all superyachts sold to US owners in 2018 at $8.043 billion, which includes brokerage sales and new projects under construction in the latest Global Order Book, up 32.5 percent in just three years. Pepper XIII is hull No 3 of the Westport 125, the Washington State builder’s newest offering (there are seven currently on the water or in build). The 125 model joined the lineup three years ago with the launch of Black Gold, which premiered at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. While just five feet shorter than the 130, in actuality it’s smaller because it is a raised pilothouse design, not a tri-deck. At the same time, it’s a lot bigger than the 112, also a raised pilothouse. The extra length goes to a good-sized on-deck master suite with his-and-hers baths while still (typically) retaining the comfortable country kitchen that the 112 is known for. Central to the processing from catch to plate is a pair of huge custom stainless-steel chests set in the cockpit floor that can hold large fish of more than 200lbs. “When fishing, we set the temperature at 34 degrees,” skipper Danny Bos says. “The minute a fish is landed, it gets dispatched then bled and goes into a chest. They are linked to an ice maker, so we can pump flake ice directly into the chest and then add saltwater to form a slurry.” Large game fish can heat up during the fight.
