Huge, heartfelt congratulations to everyone who picked up a Neptune at the BOAT International 2019 World Superyacht Awards in May (page 67). These highly coveted accolades are judged by an elite panel of current and former superyacht owners, who bring hundreds of years of combined experience to the table. They made more than 250 individual inspections of the nominated yachts this year, and spent weeks poring over layouts, specs, photos, videos and statements from key parties involved in each build. BOAT International has no say in the outcome, which is the only way to maintain the integrity of the process. Nothing shows off the new Princess Yachts better than the pair of helm seats in the forward corner of the S78’s salon. These are not demure seats that a designer fretted might block someone’s view, but mighty black monoliths more likely to be spotted on Game of Thrones. More power to them At first glance, Tankoa’s 164ft Binta d’Or and CCN’s 102ft Vanadis don’t have much in common, but they both carry a little extra that gives them greater range and lower fuel consumption. Binta d’Or’s hybrid propulsion package combines MTU engines with two 300kW electric motors fed by variable speed generators, allowing the yacht to operate in four modes, from diesel electric (with a speed of 10.5 knots and a range of 4,900nm) to conventional (with a top speed of 18 knots). LILY GABRIELLA Raised between her native Brazil and Monaco, Lily Gabriella Elia was exposed to beautiful jewels in her childhood, courtesy of the impressive collection belonging to her grandmother, the philanthropist Lily Safra. After training at the Gemological Institute of America and working at Christie’s Geneva, she created her own collection with Sotheby’s Diamonds, inspired by her favorite art. Named “An Ode to Yellow,” each piece in the range is conceived around rare yellow diamonds of different shapes and sizes, often with colorful gemstones. “The brief for Elandess was to create a family-focused yacht. The client and his family, including children and grandchildren, often travel together and it was important that the boat catered to adults as well as youngsters, with spaces for each generation to relax and enjoy themselves. We are particularly proud of the Neptune lounge. It’s the most striking room on board, with the most amazing underwater view and soft amphitheater-style seating. Since 1846, Ulysse Nardin has created timepieces inspired by its passion for the sea. Its latest creation, the Marine Mega Yacht, debuted at this year’s Miami Yacht Show (where Ulysse Nardin was the official timekeeper) on the 156ft Baglietto Silver Fox (also making its US debut). The hefty 44mm case is crafted in platinum, with a combination of white gold and blue grand feu enamel on the dial, depicting the bow of a boat. Wound by hand, the power reserve of 80 hours is displayed at 3 o’clock by a small anchor, which gradually drops as the mainspring unwinds. The BOAT International World Superyacht Awards are unique in that they are judged by a dedicated team of current and former superyacht owners. The judges travel all over the world to visit the nominated yachts, and use their knowledge and expertise to make informed judgments about each entrant. Personal inspections are supplemented by detailed dossiers on each nominee, which include photos, video, specifications, layouts and statements from the owner, designers and shipyard. At the center of the reception area of Swiss entrepreneur and philanthropist Ernesto Bertarelli’s London office stands a large mirror-finish stainless-steel globe. When talking about environmentally conscious development it is easy to focus on new builds such as the Bawah Reserve, but restoration can be equally important. Set in a row of striking “shophouses” built in 1929 in Singapore’s Chinatown, the Six Senses Maxwell, which opened in December 2018, is an admirable demonstration of the importance of renovation. Behind its art deco facade, complete with the original lion-head rain spouts, lies a sumptuous interior with hand-woven silk rugs, hardwood floors and burgundy velvet upholstery. Once 14 houses, it has been transformed into 138 guest rooms and suites without changing the existing structure of the building.
