In October 2018, actor Gillian Anderson delivered a petition of more than 350,000 signatures to the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office, demanding the creation of the Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary, which, at 700,000 square miles, would be the world’s largest marine protected area. Consensus was needed by all 24 members of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. In the end, Russia, China and Norway voted against it.
