It was a perfect day for a yacht cruise. The sun shone brightly over the Tuscan coast and a breeze brushed softly across the blond teak decks. But the group on board Spectre was disappointed. An influx of young wealth into the sport yacht market has led to a resurgence of this sector. These slick, fast boats took the worst hit of any yacht type during the global financial crisis, when brokers reported that those taking their first steps into yachting were retreating. But a total of 56 projects have been recorded in 2019’s Global Order Book, a significant year-on-year increase from 39 last year. Well-planned crew areas were a selling point for Silver Fox’s owner on his new Baglietto T-Line 48. “Unusually for a spec boat, the layout has very generous crew areas,” the owner says. “Often with a spec boat, a builder overdoes the owner areas and then it’s actually impractical – there’s not enough storage or they give the crew the worst space possible, and we are believers in ‘happy crew, happy guests.’” The crew areas on board Silver Fox make up nearly one third of the yacht’s accommodation space, measuring in at 1,075 square feet versus the owner and guest area of 3,680 square feet. They’re called yachtfishers, sportfish yachts or sportfishing superyachts, but for Barry Stewart these terms are inadequate. Northern Dream, he explains, is a “superfish.” She’s among the largest yachts that have fishing as a central part of their mission. Stewart has made sure his dream boat is ready to snag the big ones. The yacht’s extended, roomy cockpit contains a fighting chair with the bait tank built into the wide coaming. Two insulated, generous fish lockers that can store large catches are positioned in the sole, where fish can be kept on ice, bathed in saltwater brine or frozen. Brazilian jewelry designer Silvia Furmanovich’s recent collection pairs the tones and textures of salvaged wood from the Amazon with rare and precious gems, gold and diamonds. Motifs of flora and fauna created from precise hand-cut veneers are juxtaposed with tromp l’oeil renderings of faceted gemstones. The collection was inspired by a trip to Acre, Brazil’s westernmost state. There, the designer met native craftsmen who are masters in marquetry. This painstaking process involves the assembly of hand-cut wood veneer shapes, created from objects found in the rainforest. Artisans, in search of raw materials such as bark or fallen branches, collect colored woods like muirapiranga (red), tatajuba (yellow), louro-abacate (green), roxinho (purple) and azul carvalho (blue). My family and I are boat people. I have a 36ft Yellowfin, a Hell’s Bay flats boat, a 42ft Cigarette Huntress, a Carolina skiff and a 1944 50ft workboat that I restored and play with on Chesapeake Bay. Semi-custom yachts exist along a spectrum: at one end are those with identical exteriors and technical platforms and different interior styles and perhaps layouts. At the other end, you will find more flexible experiments in semi-custom building. These are yachts that start off with a set design but which can be modified to try out new ideas in space planning, facilities and even exterior styling.
