VENDETTA Singer-songwriter Billy Joel’s 57ft cruiser Vendetta, built at Derecktor in 2005, has begun a new life in Newport, California. A new owner bought the boat from the International Seakeeper Society to which it had been donated, trucked it cross country and worked on the refit with Doug Zurn, who had collaborated with Joel on her original design. The refit (below) has done nothing to diminish the boat’s undeniable charm – or speed – but has added a comfortable seashell-shaped couch and service bars to create a new entertainment area. Jeremiah Goodman, who died in September 2017, spent the better part of the 20th century painting important rooms with his gestural, dream-like watercolors. A recently released monograph of his work, Jeremiah: Inspired Interiors, offers design aesthetes a comprehensive survey of the artist’s singular élan, which made him the go-to illustrator for the likes of Billy Baldwin, Philip Johnson, Diana Vreeland and Carolina Herrera. Goodman, who simply signed his work “Jeremiah”, used ethereal brushstrokes to convey a vivid sense of mood and style. The monograph is testament to his celebrity following and depicts the exotic world to which he was granted entry. Plenty of brands produce watches that look the part on board a boat, but few can boast quite such strong links with the sea as Ulysse Nardin. The brand became renowned for its marine chronometers during the latter half of the 19th century and went on to supply the navies of no fewer than 50 countries. A chronometer was once the most important item to be carried on board since its accuracy provided the key to navigation. But by the early 1980s electronic timekeepers had surpassed even Ulysse Nardin’s finest efforts, and the name might have been consigned to the history books were it not for Zurich-born businessman Rolf Schnyder, who bought the company when it was in decline. I learned how to sail as a child, and in graduate school I had a quarter ton boat that I raced in San Francisco, but I was an average sailor. The honors list this year is long and distinguished. The streets of Grenada are paved in red, green, and gold. Every Independence Day, the island’s villages compete to be named the most patriotic, daubing walls and pavements in the national stripe, and the resulting color explosion remains all year round. Iconic Italian menswear brand Kiton has launched KNT, a new urbanwear line. Designed by twins Mariano and Walter De Matteis, the third generation of the family that owns the Naples-based brand, the collection – which stands for Kiton New Textures – began with deep research into new fabrics such as 14-micron wool, worsted cashmere and a cashmere and linen blend. “We created new looms to work such fine yarns,” says CEO Antonio De Matteis. The Dominic Republic-based shipyard Inversiones Bastilla del Caribe (IBC) has installed a new 330 ton travel lift at Marina Casa de Campo in La Romana. Superyachts and larger catamarans, sailing yachts and sportfishers can now be hauled in order to undergo repairs and refits. IBC founder Mauro Caslini set up his first shipyard in Acapulco in 1996 and his Dominican Republic yard – which is one of the largest in the Caribbean, with a 25,000 sq ft dry dock – has worked on thousands of vessels since it opened in 2000. It specializes in the maintenance and repair of yachts and other luxury boats, offering services including humidity control, hull and superstructure painting, filter change and engine reviews. From the moment her owner first laid eyes on this classic beauty, he knew it was the only yacht for him, but it would be a decade before they could be together. “He has loved this boat for 10 years,” says Haida 1929’s captain, Daan de Witt. “He told me once that he won’t own any other boat if he can’t own this one.” Haida 1929 is indeed the owner’s first yacht, and his passion for her propelled a thorough 16-month refit, set on restoring the 218ft (233ft with bowsprit) motor yacht to her former glory, and then some. A top-to-bottom paint job, technical tweaks, a brand new interior… and a well-known Feadship has a whole new life as Cynthia. Her new owner joined forces with American interior designer Claudette Bonville Associates and his captain on the makeover. Respectful of the yacht’s pedigree, they decided to enhance the existing features on his first Feadship rather than tear things down, but the transformation is amazing. “Most people have a hard time figuring out which Feadship this used to be and that means we accomplished our goal,” says Timothy Silva, the yacht’s captain. The must-have car for driving around Europe and America’s chicest resorts during the Swinging Sixties was not a Ferrari, a Maserati or an Aston Martin – but the humble Fiat. The model in question was a Spiaggina, or Jolly, the former standing for “beach car” and referencing the fact that this coach-built special, based on the 600D, had neither doors nor roof. Its upholstery, meanwhile, was made from sand- and sea-friendly wicker that laughed in the face of wet towels, damp bikinis and spilled champagne. Just as the designers of yacht interiors are diversifying into residential projects, so furniture and accessories are becoming increasingly transferable too. The Danish design house Glyn Peter Machin is known for its yacht furniture, but it also produces pieces for domestic spaces, both indoors and out. It is among the designers showcased by Summit Furniture, which specializes in supplying hand-crafted teak pieces for marine environments and now land-based projects too. Summit works with craftsmen such as Mark Anders, Linley, John Munford, Kipp Stewart and Alwy Visschedyk and all pieces are upholstered in specially commissioned high-performance endurance fabrics. At the higher end of the hi-fi market, great sound design is being matched by great product design – and you really do get what you pay for. It has already been a bumper year for the sector, with venerable brands such as Monitor Audio, the British company that has been making quality speakers since the 1970s, unveiling its new Studio series (monitoraudio.com). Curling up with a good book on a cold day in front of a roaring fire – is there anything more romantic than that? “The owner wanted to reinstate the fireplace in the owner’s saloon,” designer Adam Lay says. He also wanted a fireplace added forward in the formal dining room. Along with one in the main salon, there are now three fireplaces on board the restored classic Haida 1929. Designing fireplaces or fire pits on a yacht is never easy. So to be able to have a fireplace where you can actually feel a bit of heat on a cold day is a luxury indeed.
