The Netherlands has one of the richest shipbuilding heritages of any country, and it’s getting even richer as established Dutch firms start to build bigger and bigger yachts. Following on from Royal Huisman’s sailing behemoth Athena in 2004 (295ft including bowsprit) and Vitters’ collaboration with Oceanco on 281ft Aquijo , Icon Yachts will join the 80 meter (262ft 5in)-plus club in 2020 with 275ft project Icon 280 and Heesen in 2022 with Project Cosmos. But the Dutch powerhouses that have led the way in this segment are Feadship, Amels and Oceanco. The beachfront in Bira offers a timeless scene. The model that really got me into boating was a 23ft Cobalt that I had on Geneva Lake about 21 years ago. I used to like to get on that boat and go to dinner. Marine Anti-Drone System Martek Marine has developed a system capable of identifying and combating drones that come too close to the yacht. The MADS unit scans for threats up to three miles away and is able to obtain the model and serial numbers of the drone and compare it with a list of previous threats. One of the biggest jobs was to give Genesia a proper yacht wheelhouse – but one that would also match her ship’s credentials. The original bridge configuration of the Ievoli class supply vessel was typical of a tug, with front and rear steering stations. It was fairly small and narrow. The space was completely rethought and built anew with a transversal orientation, which allowed positioning an integrated bridge by Böning/ Furuno in the center between two internal wing stations. The redesign also included the addition of a captain’s cabin. Typical of many commercial ships, instead of wipers the bridge window is fitted with a clearview screen to deflect rain, snow or ice.
