The fertile semi-custom market continues to bear fruit. In the 30-40m [98-131ft] bracket, 34 new or renewed semi-custom series will debut this year, and in most size ranges the number of such builds is rising year-on-year. But the character of semi-custom superyachting is evolving too. Stefano de Vivo, chief commercial officer of Ferretti Group, says one of the major changes in the 24-40m [78-131ft] semi-custom market in the last five to 10 years has been “the birth of a new segment: slow planing boats,” where before there had been only fast planing, slow displacement and semi-displacement. The Georg Jensen Fish Dish 1026 in sterling silver was first designed in 1954 by leading Scandinavian designer Henning Koppel. Today, its organic sculptural shape remains contemporary. After a career in finance, Sophie Bonvin launched The Collector, a luxury handbag and accessory company, in Geneva, three years ago. Made from exotic skins, the bags come in vibrant colors and limited quantities. Bonvin works closely with the designers “to make items I would want for myself.” She also joins the chief designer to select the skins in Paris and Milan, and then tests the prototypes to see if they should go into development. Alongside her signature line, Bonvin releases limited-edition artist collaborations every two years. Inspired by the animal kingdom, jeweler David Webb has created numerous whimsical sea creature designs over the years, from one-of-a-kind shell brooches in the mid-1960s, to a collection of “Renaissance Brooches” that includes a baroque pearl Neptune Brooch and a Seahorse Brooch. GO’s owner suggested that H2 Yacht Design contact glass sculptor Dale Chihuly for a statement piece for the yacht’s central staircase. Chihuly, born and raised in Seattle, has become globally known since he started making glass art in the 1970s. “The client first visited Chihuly in Seattle in early 2017, meeting Dale in person and touring the Chihuly Ballard Studio,” says Ruth Thomas of H2. “They have their current projects in build there and do full-scale mock-ups.” After determining the basic design, next came the palette. The Sunreef 80 has an entirely new hull design, which sets her apart from previous projects and also aids her sailing performance. With a narrow entry at the waterline, and a smooth distribution of the buoyancy curve, the catamaran has very low wave resistance. “The boat is perfectly balanced both under and above the water,” says Sunreef’s in-house naval architect Adam Paruszewski, “offering a smooth sailing experience while remaining a vast, luxurious yacht.” The Sunreef 80 had to be a serious sailer and capable of safe, comfortable transatlantic passages. I started sailing when I was eight years old, but I was 26 before I bought my first sailboat, a 31ft ketch. During the 1970s and 80s I did a lot of ocean racing; my favorite event was the Solo Offshore Racing Club.
