Opera singer Maria Callas’s famous love affair with Aristotle Onassis began on 325ft Christina during a three-week cruise along the Greek and Turkish coasts in the summer of 1959. By the end of the trip their respective marriages – hers to Italian music impresario Giovanni Battista Meneghini and his to Tina Livanos – were officially over. The couple became inseparable until Onassis left Callas for Jackie Kennedy in 1964. Boating has been a way of life for us and our family for about 50 years. Our first boat was a 16ft aluminum fishing boat that we carried on top of the station wagon and used for crabbing on Chesapeake Bay. We have enjoyed at least a dozen different vessels, smaller boats when our kids had weekend activities, larger ones now that we have more time to play. Our favorite is every boat we have. As Project Gisele, the hull and superstructure were supposed to be painted white. But Balk was far from happy with the finish. “In some places, we found two centimeters of filler on the superstructure part,” project manager Wim Mooiweer says. “We had to do some tests, because we couldn’t guarantee the adhesion of the filler.” Even after the hull was repaired and extended, Balk wasn’t happy to go for another gloss finish because it would show the imperfections in the hull too clearly. With a tight budget, it settled instead on a “mousy” matte gray from Italy’s Boero Yacht Coatings. “In the end it worked out that we picked the right one, because the hardness was similar to the original,” Mooiweer adds.…

A beacon of sophistication on Rhode Island’s coastline, Ocean House has welcomed guests since 1868, when wealthy New Yorkers used to arrive for the summer season with parasols, top hats and trunk luggage. Age took its toll on the seafront hotel and by 2003 it was forced to close its doors. The designers at Radyca singled out the newly created outdoor cinema as one of their favorite edits on Laurentia. They redrew and extended the seating area on the aft deck and inserted a retractable high-definition projector and screen into the ceiling, right above the sliding doors leading into the main salon. “The screen is dual sided, allowing the guests to enjoy a movie or music videos from the salon and the aft deck at the same time,” the lead designer says. Timothy Oulton’s new collection, launched at the Salone del Mobile design fair in Milan, is a departure for his brand. Noble Souls employs materials and traditional hand-made design practices from across the world. “I always wanted to do a fabric, but it had to be unique,” says Oulton, who worked with a textile specialist to find a remote Chinese village where women have been indigo dyeing and weaving fabric for centuries. With years of experience supplying tutors for yachts and consulting on classroom design, Adam Caller of Tutors International is full of ideas. Given carte blanche, he would designate a space with both natural light and the ability for at least a section to be completely dark. All walls could be used as dry-erase boards and the ceiling would have dimmable LED panels that could be set to any color. It would have wall space for presentations from something like Sony’s portable LSPX-P1 projector. It’s not even summer, the locals scoff, as I raise yet another complaint against the mad dog heat. It’s a brutal 102 degrees assault, but I spy respite ahead as we move through the big build hall at Gulf Craft’s shipyard in the little emirate of Umm al-Quwain, north of Dubai.
