There are now more than 10,000 superyachts in the world, if you consider a superyacht, like we do, as anything over 79ft (24m) LOA. The number ticked up into five figures in the middle of Q2 this year. I’m still harassing our data team to find out which boat was the actual 10,000th (we should send some champagne, surely), so they’re nose down in spreadsheets trying to figure it out. The shiny end of the market – new builds – is healthy and brokerage remains bouncy, but what of the less glamorous bread-and-butter of superyacht shipyards – refit? The 12 months to August, compared to the previous 12, show a healthy refit market, with growth of at least 14 per cent. Vincent Larroque, group sales director at Monaco Marine, puts the figure even higher, describing it as “quite extraordinary, with an increase of activity of 20 per cent and a lot of beautiful superyachts to refit.” Rob Papworth, sales director at Compositeworks, also reports a rise of about 10 per cent in activity this year. “There is very strong demand in the marketplace with a large spread of scope from the essential class maintenance, up to major modifications,” he says.…

2017 When Art Basel Miami Beach opens this year – at 11am on December 6 to its First Choice or VVIP list, that afternoon to other collectors and on the 7th to the rest of the world – it may strike regulars as rather different. Anyone who has ever been faced with a large-scale design project knows exactly how daunting it can seem to turn a blank canvas into the bigger picture. It’s a reason so many of us turn to the experts, to help develop a vision – or perhaps to come up with one in the first place. “The villa was built in the 1930s by architect Piero Portaluppi, a master of Milanese design. I discovered it in 2012 and set about bringing everything back to its original state. The salon is the heart of the villa. Milton Sender hasn’t quite got it all figured out, but he might be as close as anyone’s ever managed to get. “I literally have no worries,” he says candidly on board WindQuest, his 85ft catamaran, which is riding at anchor in Bermuda’s Hamilton Harbour. “I’m totally unstressed. I built my first sailboat when I was in the third grade. I would forage for lumber, craft it into something and then take it out on the water for as long as it would float. I sailed with the Sea Scouts in high school, in college I raced on large offshore racers and at 28 bought my first real sailboat, a Ranger 26. I have had a progression of boats. After the Ranger 26, I had a Ranger 32, a Frers 36, an S&S 43 designed by Frers, and a Jonmeri 48.
