Before the global financial crisis of 2008, semi-custom series superyachts represented 50 per cent of the worldwide fleet. Today they make up 57 per cent. Semi-custom boats account for 65 per cent of superyachts on order or in build, 73 per cent of boats launched and 60 per cent of brokerage sales in the past 12 months. This is a real success story for major superyacht builders, which are also the main semi-custom builders. “The semi-custom market segment will continue to grow in years to come,” says Ugo Garassino, superyacht sales director at Azimut Yachts. Two vastly different projects at Royal Huisman offer an interesting glimpse at two schooners separated by more than a century. A few weeks ago, the Dutch sailing superyacht builder announced it had started construction of a Panamax size schooner sold by Northrop & Johnson in Asia. Unveiled in 2006, the 266ft yacht unites designer Mark Whiteley and Dykstra Naval Architects. When it is finished, sometime in 2020, project RH400 will become the world’s largest aluminum yacht. “It may look like a contemporary modern sailing yacht now but in 50 years’ time it will be a classic,” says the naval architect. Mumbai-based jeweler Bina Goenka has been collecting natural clam pearls for decades from a variety of dealers and locations, mainly in the Philippines and South East Asia. The Helen necklace, inspired by Helen of Troy, has an Edwardian-like choker as its base, with three disk-shaped cascading pendants. These have brilliant-cut diamonds at the center, from which clam pearls, diamonds and natural nacreous pearls radiate. The white jade in the bottom pendant is considered auspicious in some cultures. All 116 natural clam pearls in the necklace are of the highest AAA quality and have been chosen for their particular shapes – drops, orbs and ovals. It was an intriguing design that got Terry Giles back into yachting after many years. The rendering of a Dominator Ilumen he saw in a magazine pushed him to investigate further. Kool & the Gang, right, were the featured entertainment for Newport’s IYRS school annual fundraiser in July and the R&B band signed a guitar it donated to help raise money for the school’s scholarship fund. The silent auction’s top-earning prize was a weekend in St Barths with round-trip private jet transportation, which went for $45,000. In all, the 20th IYRS Gala raised a cool $875,000. It has been a glorious summer for the Js, concluding with the J Class World Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, held August 21 to 26. Boat International is a media partner of the J Class, and the race reunited several of the competitors that vied for victory in Bermuda. Tecnorib’s latest 1900 flagship RIB has been developed as part of Pirelli’s Design project, and as a result it is suitably luxurious and well thought out. The whole idea was to build a boat with the sleek design features of a yacht but the sportiness of a RIB. “It’s very simple, I cannot afford such a boat,” says Hugo Verlinden of the wallet-punishing world of superyacht ownership. The yacht glides along the bay like a vintage Cadillac: solid and self-assured Grand adventures don’t necessarily require a superyacht, but if you choose a more modestly sized boat you’ll need to pack a lot in.
