58°28’31.8”N 16°25’04”E Having spent the majority of my career navigating the high seas, one of my fondest memories in yachting was discovering the 102nm Göta Canal. Built in the 19th century, it meanders through rolling fields and delicate birch groves, linking a number of large lakes and rivers in the center of Sweden to provide a route from Gothenburg, in the west, to Söderköping on the Baltic Sea. There has been a boom over the past decade in the production of larger superyachts – and an increase in the number of designers working in this area. Some 333 projects 50m (164ft) and above were launched from 2007 to 2016. In contrast, only 387 were launched between 1850 (considered the dawn of superyachting) and 2006. In total, 93 different exterior designers worked on projects of over 50m in the past 10 years, compared to 188 designers and architects for all other yachts built before 2007. For interiors, 128 studios worked on 50m-plus boats in the past 10 years, compared to about 220 companies for all other yachts built before 2007. If you study watch design closely, you’ll notice three distinctive tropes – Timeless Classic, Minimal Modernist and Over The Top – with each making a statement about the person who wears it. He’d been a client for years but we’d never done a yacht and there were others far more qualified. He tasked us with creating a floating gallery: the result is warm, modern, subtle interiors which let the art stand out. Actor and director John Malkovich has been interested in clothes and fashion photography since childhood. He studied costuming at college and, to this day, does costume design for the theater. He has walked on the runways of Comme des Garçons, and was featured in ad campaigns for Prada and Giorgio Armani. Malkovich launched an eponymous line in the early 2000s and his brand Technobohemian debuted in 2011. The newest addition to the Turquoise Yachts fleet is a lesson in reinvention – for the yacht and the shipyard that built her.
