It’s amusing to see the numbers that were considered superlative for this magazine’s first Global Order Book 25 years ago: Eight yachts in build totaling 1,135 feet secured the top builder spot for Feadship in 1992. Our current world leader, Azimut Benetti, was third on the list back then with seven projects — yes, a whole seven! Now we have nearly an entire page of our 2016 report dedicated to the Italian builder’s 63 projects totaling 8,465 feet. From a mid-’90s lull of 149 total yachts in build worldwide to the 2009 post-bubble high of 1,008, it’s been a flurry of activity since the world seemingly discovered yachting, and even better, superyachting. Just in time for prime whale-spotting season, Aman Resorts opened its first resort in the Dominican Republic on November 23. Amanera is located on Hispaniola’s pristine northern shore, 60 miles east of Puerto Plata. Set on a 2,000-acre estate with the backdrop of a mountain range, it is surrounded by rain forest. Its cliff-top setting offers views of the mile-long Playa Grande beach. At the turn of the 20th century, the spirit of Christmas sailed into Chicago — at the helm, Herman Schuenemann, who made his living hauling Christmas trees across Lake Michigan. In 1910, he bought shares in the Rouse Simmons, aka the “Christmas Tree Ship,” a 123-foot schooner, which he decorated with Christmas lights and a tree atop the main mast. The boat transported evergreens to Chicago, where Schuenemann sold them to residents dockside at the Clark Street Bridge. Schuenemann was by no means a wealthy man, yet he gave away trees to needy families. While 200,000 people flock to Mykonos each season only a few discerning travelers make it to the small island of Halki in Greece’s Dodecanese. Built in steel and aluminum by Italian yard CRN to a design by Studio Scanu and delivered in 2000, New Sunrise is Lloyd’s classed and MCA compliant. Seahorse €17.5 million The 171-foot Amels Seahorse is listed for sale by KK Superyachts of Monaco. As she walked the docks of the Monaco Yacht Show in September, Regina Egle Catrambone had a different goal in mind than most as she assessed the yachts along the way. She tried to figure out just how many people could fit on them — not 10 or 12, she was thinking more in terms of hundreds. “She liked Bartender a lot,” says Steve Reoch, a broker with All Ocean Yachts, who accompanied her. With the unveiling of this all-new car, the BMW 7 Series now enters its sixth generation. But before any of those flagship sport sedans, there was an original. Before you fire your chef, check the sound levels on your yacht. Studies indicate that noise over 80 decibels affects a person’s ability to detect sweet, salty and sour flavors (which goes a long way in explaining airplane food!). Chefs won’t have any excuse on Heesen’s new Project Nova. In hybrid mode, with the generators running electric shaft motors, the 164-foot yacht averages a soothing 46 decibels inside. Although the “Downton Abbey” era of dinners in white tie-and-tails may have passed, the attraction of a warming and subtle drink at the day’s end has not. “Tourbillon” — the name rolls off the tongue. It comes from the French word for “whirlwind” and has the same etymology as “turbo.” Originally developed and patented by French-Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801, the tourbillon’s main goal is to defeat the effects of gravity in an ingenious and beautiful way. With a tourbillon, the escapement and balance wheel are mounted in a rotating cage. This counteracts gravity when the watch — and its movement — are in varying positions on the wearer’s wrist.
