In the interminable age of the “It” bag, it is refreshing to discover a brand that is under the radar but has the craftsmanship and design integrity to rival Hermès or Louis Vuitton. Moynat, established in 1849, actually predates Vuitton. The company’s reputation blossomed after Pauline Moynat opened her first boutique in the heart of Paris in 1869. It was the go-to address for the upper class to procure specialty trunks of the highest quality. Moynat innovated with coated canvas and lightweight wicker and then, in the age of the automobile, with curved bottoms that made its trunks ideally suited for cars. Since then, Princess Diana, Tony Blair and Nelson Mandela have been guests. Little Halls Pond Cay, The Bahamas Johnny Depp discovered his island paradise while filming “Pirates of the Caribbean.” He named two of its six beaches Gonzo and Brando, in honor of his mentors Hunter S. Sailing Yacht A is a radical sail-assisted yacht that pushes all technical boundaries. Her rigging and masts, designed by Dykstra Naval Architects, alone are staggering in their size and complexity. Composite giant Magma Structures in Portsmouth, UK, built the three colossal unstayed masts in four large sections, using conventional female molding techniques with high-strength carbon/epoxy prepreg laminate. Embedded in each of the masts are fiber optic sensors that will provide the skipper with live and historic data. Driftwood Surfboards is the brainchild of Scotsman David Forsyth of Cornwall, England. Old church pews, classic English pub wall paneling or town hall flooring find a new life in the surfboards he crafts. He also uses wood harvested in conjunction with the UK’s Woodland Trust. Even the glue he uses, “Super Sap Bio Resin,” is plant-based, in accordance with the company’s eco-friendly ethos. Forsyth hails from the superyacht world. Canadian sculptor Simon Morris’ “Amphitrite” is 15 years old this year. Since its creation in a foundry in British Columbia, the nine-foot-tall bronze statue has been attracting divers to her resting place 50 feet below the surface off Sunset House in Grand Cayman. The mermaid has not aged much in 15 years. As one of the Cayman Islands’ most popular diving sites, she attracts lots of hands that help her stay free of algae. November begins the time of year when “temperate climes” undergo a drastic change and become anything but. Mother Nature can be awful when she’s roused, as mariners have known for centuries. The trick, of course, is to dress for the elements in clothing that’s as good-looking as it is practical (for footwear, see sidebar). For urbanites, this means warm but lightweight parkas, duffel coats, anoraks and the like. Designers this season have been very obliging, offering shapes both short and long; in leather, wool, cashmere or nylon; colorful or subdued; with plenty of extras like down fill, fur trim, detachable hoods and multiple pockets. Though the Dawn is being touted as a brand-new model for Rolls-Royce, at least one portion of it is not original: its name. Like many great stage productions, it’s a revival. The name Dawn was first used on a Rolls-Royce in 1949 and it graced more than two dozen custom convertible vehicles manufactured over the next five years: the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn Drophead Coupés. Equipped with a 4.3- or 4.6-liter inline six-cylinder engine, and a four-speed manual or automatic transmission, they were among the most exclusive Rolls-Royces of the postwar era. I always like to read two books — something light (currently Gray Mountain by John Grisham) and also something non-fiction (Simon Winchester’s Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded). The latter is an amazing story of how one event shook the stability of the entire planet. My Breitling Superocean is all I need on board — I’ve had it for 30 years. I am a radio addict. BBC Radio 4 is normally on in my stateroom. I love the podcasts and, of course, the “Today” program. My crew, being Indonesian, are wonderful musicians. The real pirates of the Caribbean certainly were not the affable swashbuckling miscreants of the Silver Screen. Life aboard an early 18th -century pirate ship was not an alluring adventure; rather, it was a grim existence saturated with violence, danger, disease and death. Contrary to popular belief, most pirates lived a life of stark poverty. Legendary pirates like Edward Teach, Jean-David Nau and Bartholomew Roberts were quite simply entrepreneurial psychopaths, while some of the most successful, such as “Red-Legs” Greaves and Henry Jennings, are practically footnotes in pirate lore. Although piracy has taken place throughout history, “The Golden Age of Piracy” (roughly 1650-1730) coincided with the European colonization of the Americas.
